Seasonal Allergies ~ Part 2

You can read Part 1 of Seasonal Allergies here. Let me share some more home remedies for seasonal allergies.

Remember that one of the most important aspects of treating allergies with natural remedies is to begin treatment about two weeks before allergy season begins and continue treatment until about 2 weeks after allergy season ends. However, if you are in the middle of allergy season now, go ahead and start with the remedies of your choice.  Continue with your chosen herbal remedies until about 2 weeks after allergy season subsides in your area.

A wonderful treatment for seasonal allergies is honey. The trick is that the honey must come from a hive that is within 5 miles of your home. This way the honey is being made from the very plants that make you sneeze! You can find a source for local honey from you nearest beekeepers’ association.

Local honey desensitizes your body to those plants that make you sneeze – this is the same principle that shots from the allergist works on but much more fun and tasty! When we moved to Tennessee I began taking one teaspoon of honey a day from a local source.  Before long, we had our own bees and the perfect source for what blooms around me! I have found, over the years, my allergies have almost all disappeared! Just a teaspoon a day makes a huge difference in how I feel during spring and fall.

Who loves Chamomile tea?  This has been a staple in my home for over 30 years.  Chamomile tea was a regular part of lunch time in my home when I had four busy little boys who I desperately needed to take an afternoon nap!

Just a few of these buds from my garden have more flavor and benefit than a box of purchased chamomile tea!  It is an easy to grow annual plant. It re-seeds itself prolifically so you will always have some plants come up again next year.


Chamomile from the store is finely cut and sifted and there is very little in a tea bag. It seems bland and flavorless to me now.  If you don’t grow it, you can easily find it at Mountain Rose Herbs (link in my sidebar) as organic whole dried flower buds. Almost as good as growing it yourself!

Although you probably knew about the calming effects of Chamomile tea…did you know that Chamomile also reduces the intensity and duration of allergic reactions? Drink a cup 2 or three times a day, sweetened with stevia or honey…never use white sugar when preparing an herbal remedy!

Be sure you are using German Chamomile (Matricaria recutita).  Roman Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) can cause allergic reactions in people who are sensitive to ragweed. You don’t want to introduce more allergy issues! Be aware that German chamomile and Roman chamomile  have some different medicinal properties.

Horseradish is another wonderful natural remedy for allergies.  It helps to relieve sinus congestion and is even known for preventing future allergy attacks.   You only need to take about a teaspoon  a day.

Steam therapy using Eucalyptus helps to ease the congestion you experience during allergy season. Place about an ounce of the whole dried herb (or a handful of fresh!) in a bowl and cover with about one cup of boiling water. Lean over the bowl and make a “steam tent” with a bath towel.  Inhale the steam as it rises.  Be careful not to burn yourself!

We also use Peppermint in steam therapy, just as directed above, for nasal and sinus congestion.

Remember…when using herbs for medicinal purposes, it is essential to use organic herbs!

Our favorite remedy for congestion is my Breathe Easy Chest Rub! This all natural salve is packed with herbal oils and essential oils that have been carefully formulated to ease congestion, especially at night.  Best of all it is all natural, unlike store remedies that are petroleum based. We use it when we suffer with allergies, colds, sinus issues or bronchial issues.
